ANGELS HAIL UNUSUAL TIME FOR A RECORD MONTH
Brits are looking for new jobs in record numbers with one Birmingham firm, despite the summer being a traditionally quiet time of year. Angel Services Group has enjoyed a ‘July high’ of finding the right people for the right jobs, to the delight – if slight surprise – of bosses.
The firm is Birmingham’s newly arrived recruitment consultancy that recently moved into plush offices in Brindleyplace, after five years in Walsall. There are usually two peak months for busy times in the industry, January and September. But the company’s ‘July high’ came during one of the normally quiet months, when people are on holiday, enjoying the weather or pre-occupied with their children during the school summer holidays.
James Ball, head of operations for Angel Services Group, said he was delighted and felt the bad weather could have played a part.“We were thrilled to have had a record level of billing in July, especially for what is usually a slow time for us,” he said.“Perhaps people are opting to look at a new career path because they haven’t had the good weather we usually see.”
However one leading expert believed the peak was less about the bad weather and more about confidence in the economy. Dr Mike Grojean, head of Executive Education and a work and organisational psychologist at Aston Business School in Birmingham, said: “In order to make a life-changing move like choosing a new job, people need to feel comfortable – even if subconsciously - with the state of the nation’s economy,” he said.“But people’s decisions to move jobs are not just for economic reasons. There are a series of motivators and satisfiers, including job satisfaction, financial satisfaction, and their social needs being met.”
He added: “Obviously there will be a core of people who will need to change jobs through necessity, but for the majority who change through choice, they need to have a feel good factor.“If people are unsure of the future then they will tend to stay put, even after taking the chance to reassess their life goals, such as during a summer holiday.
“All of this suggests this summer’s poor weather has very little to do with their decision to move, instead Angel Services Group’s success could be a reflection of Gordon Brown’s honeymoon period which coincidentally began at the start of July.”
