NHS survey set to reveal any major issues
Aston Business School is working with the Healthcare Commission to produce the largest staff survey in the world. The annual National Health Service Staff Survey is an independent examination of the views of all NHS staff. It aims to gather information that can be used to improve the working lives of staff and so provide better care for patients.

Aston Business School has been producing the survey since 2003. It regularly attracts more than 200,000 responses - which equates to 60% of people who are eligible to complete the survey. In previous years it has revealed some very interesting information, including problems with bullying and violence towards staff. Each year the questions are revised after consultation with the NHS workforce, and this time for instance, the survey includes questions about 'types of errors witnessed.' Jeremy Dawson, Director of the Institute for Health Services Effectiveness at Aston Business School who heads up the survey team, said: "It is important with any survey to get the maximum number of responses and the broadest range of views. This allows for greater accuracy in the analysis and subsequent reporting. Plentiful data means more exact results so I would encourage everyone who receives the survey to complete and return it."

The local trust to Aston Business School is The University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust which has almost 7,000 employees across more than 40 disciplines, who deliver high quality care to more than half a million patients every year. Jeremy Dawson visited their Selly Oak Hospital Accident and Emergency unit to mark the launch of the 2007 survey. Respondents have until the end of the year to reply.
