Jimmy White plays pool against allcomers at Wimbledon Stadium
05/03/08

Snooker legend Jimmy White will be taking on allcomers for charity at Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium.

The ever popular ‘Whirlwind’ is laying down the gauntlet to members of the public this Friday. (February 29)

And today he said he will be trying his best to beat all the competition to raise up to £5,000 for the track’s retired greyhounds.

The ‘people’s champion’ is leading the race to raise money for Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare, which finds homes for greyhounds when they retire from racing.

Anyone who wants to play Jimmy at pool must pledge to donate £100 to the charity and most of the games are already taken.

The evening is sponsored by Betfair and also features a full night of racing at the Plough Lane venue.

It is the second year running that Jimmy White, who is a keen greyhound racing fan and owns a number of dogs, has played people at Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium. And once again he has given his time for free.

Jimmy, who has just qualified for the World Championships again and still believes he can win it, said: “I have been going to Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium since I was 13 and as the years went on I became a greyhound owner too, which meant I came across the Retired Greyhounds Trust.

“My son and I regularly visit the trust and walk the dogs for them and I think it is a great cause.”

He added: “It will be nice to meet a few people and play a few games against fans.

“They will all be trying to beat me so I will be trying to beat them too, but it’s nice to meet the fans and have a bit of a laugh.”

Darren Kennedy, General Manager at Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium, said: “Jimmy has always been a fantastic ambassador for the sport of snooker and remains as popular as ever with his legions of fans.

“We are delighted to welcome him back to give people this unique opportunity to play one of snooker’s biggest stars.”

Jimmy will play around 15 games of pool from 8pm.
