09/01/08

Some of Britain’s best billiards players will be back in Birmingham for a national tournament.

The hot shots will be hoping to secure selection for the England team when they play at Hall Green Stadium’s Snooker Club this weekend.

All of the UK’s top amateur players are expected to compete in the National Billiards Ranking Series event, which is free to attend.

They will be aiming to gain a top eight ranking and secure selection for the England team.

There are currently about 20 players capable of reaching the top eight, but up to 60 players could take part at the Hall Green Stadium’s Snooker Club this Sunday. (January 13)

Adam Osborne, Hall Green Stadium’s Snooker Club Manager, said: “We are delighted that so many amateur players are in with a chance of representing their country.

“I’m sure the standard of competition will be very high this weekend and that should make for some very exciting games for spectators.”

The event is being sponsored by Sure Leisure Ltd, who supply amusement and gaming machines, and it starts at 11am. It is free to attend for spectators and refreshments will be available at the stadium, off York Road, Hall Green, Birmingham. For more information please call 0870 840 7380.

Among the players expected to take part are current number one Martin Goodwill from Malmesbury and previous English Champions Billy Bousfield, Phil Mumford, John Mullan, Matthew Sutton, Charlie Gay and Jim McCann.
