Retired racers return to track as TV stars
09/01/08
Eight retired greyhounds are set to become television stars when they step back on the track in Birmingham.
The former racers, who were all found happy homes by the Hall Green Retired Greyhound Trust (RGT), will parade in front of thousands of fans during a prestigious night of racing.
They will each lead out six racing greyhounds during a pre-race parade at Hall Green Greyhound Stadium.
The awareness-raising night takes place next Tuesday (Jan 15) on the same night as the final of the Betdirect Prestige race.
A brief history of each retired greyhounds’ racing careers will be read out, including to those watching at home on Sky Sports.
The dog will then be lead away from the track before each race begins so they don’t get tempted to come out of retirement.
More than 180 former racing greyhounds were found happy homes by Hall Green RGT in 2007. It is a charity that relies on voluntary support and sponsorship to make a real difference to the lives of hundreds of former racing greyhounds.
Simon Gray, branch chairman of Hall Green RGT, said: “This special night is a great chance to promote the excellent work of our 40 plus volunteers, who find homes for dogs, fundraise and attend a great many events on behalf of Hall Green RGT.
“I’m sure the retired greyhounds will really enjoy being back at the track but we will have to make sure they don’t end up joining the race!”
Stephen Rea, General Manager of Hall Green Stadium, said: “Hall Green RGT’s invaluable work is well supported by the track throughout the year and we are delighted to see these retired racers making a welcome return.
“I’m sure they will enjoy being centre of attention at the track on what is a very big night of racing for us.”
