Cheltenham Festival Goes to the Dogs
12/03/08
The race meeting at Hall Green Greyhound Stadium was besieged today by around a thousand extra punters from Cheltenham who had been defeated in their day out by stormy weather. The lunchtime ‘bags’ meeting which is principally held to provide TV greyhound racing footage for betting shops normally attracts only 20 visitors, but today extra staff had to be called in to cook and serve food to the coach parties that diverted from wind torn Cheltenham, as well as serving more than 70 bottles of champagne, which is itself believed to be a track record.
Stadium Manager Stephen Rea, who had planned to visit Cheltenham today suddenly found himself at work. He said “Naturally, I’m disappointed that I’ve missed my day out at Cheltenham, but on the other hand, I’m delighted that we’ve been able contribute to a successful day out for over a thousand people. There’s been a party atmosphere that looks set to continue as the crowd moves on to the next venue.”
