Ex-Villa stars raise thousands at Perry Barr Stadium
15/01/08
Former Aston Villa stars turned out for a night at the dogs to raise thousands of pounds for charity.
Ex-professional players, including from the club’s European Cup-winning team of 1982, enjoyed an evening at Perry Barr Greyhound Stadium in Birmingham.
Companies or individuals had the chance to dine with their footballing heroes and there were more than a dozen in attendance.
They could also sponsor races at the popular track, with all proceeds going to the League of Friends of the John Taylor Hospice.
The event attracted hundreds of Villa fans, some of whom sought autographs for their club shirts and on their Perry Barr racecards from the night, which took place on Friday. (JAN 11)
Carol Chown-Smith, General Manager of Perry Barr Greyhound Stadium, said it was a very popular fundraiser.
“We were delighted to welcome the former Villa players to Perry Barr, not only because Villa Park is just up the road but because it was such a worthy cause they were supporting.
“It was a fantastic night out for everybody involved and we look forward to hosting many similar events in the future.”
She added: “We support a wide range of good causes with a night out at the dogs – it is not only a great way to raise money but a fantastic night out for everyone involved.”
The fundraiser was organised by the Aston Villa Former Player’s Association.
The Association, which incorporates the Aston Villa All Stars football team, has raised more than £3.5 million for good causes across the UK.
