Fancy Dress fundraiser shocks visitors at Perry Barr Stadium
19/03/08

Amy Winehouse, Batman, Spiderman, a dalmation and a 117 117 runner all helped to raise almost £1,000 for charity.

They were the fancy dress costumes chosen by runners in a special human race at Perry Barr Greyhound Stadium.

The televised charity fundraiser saw Birmingham bookmaker Keith Johnson donate £500 from his own pocket towards the good causes.

The five fancy dress contestants, (NOTE: there should have been six but one runner dropped out on the day) ran half a lap of the track in front of more than 1,000 people on March 7.

And there was an extra when Harry the Hound - the track’s Retired Greyhound Trust mascot – jumped out on the final bend to join in the race and entertained the crowd by diving over the finish line – in last place!

Race winner Warren Dudley, aged 21 and from Birmingham, scooped a pair of flights to Spain, courtesy of Monarch.co.uk.

The fancy dress race was part of a fundraising evening organized by the track and Birmingham’s BRMB.

Proceeds will go to Birmingham BRMB’s own charity ‘Help a local Child’ and Perry Barr’s Retired Greyhound Trust (RGT).

Carol Chown-Smith, General Manager at Perry Barr Stadium, said: “It was a fantastic night and everybody got into the fundraising spirit, especially our bookmaker Keith Johnson whose donation was a brilliant gesture.”

“We were overwhelmed by the support shown by the people of Birmingham and are looking forward to hosting similar events in the future.”

BRMB’s Big Brum Breakfast presenter Elliott Webb said: “What a fantastic night - and I never say that about losing money!

“Our listeners, as ever, did us proud and it was a great way to raise some money for Help a Local Child.”
