DOUBLE RETIREMENT AT PERRY BARR STADIUM
Two speed machines have celebrated their ‘retirement’ from Birmingham’s Perry Barr Stadium.

Greyhound ‘Lakers Kaz’ met Speedway star Jason Lyons at the final meeting of the Birmingham Brummies’ first season back at the track.

Lakers Kaz, known as Lady, was found a family by Perry Barr Stadium’s hugely successful Retired Greyhound Trust – which finds homes for 10 per cent of retired greyhounds in the UK.

She has joined the Walters family in Streetly, Sutton Coldfield, where she enjoys fine food, a lot of fuss and family walks.

The Speedway season ended yesterday (Sunday, October 28), which means Jason Lyons has ‘retired’ temporarily until March next year.

But greyhound racing will continue throughout the year, with meetings on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings as well as Tuesday and Sunday mornings.

When Lady was racing she was trained by Kirsty Turner. She is now loved and looked after by Katharyne and Marc Walters and their three children Lauren, Alix and Lee, who also have two other greyhounds, called Thor and Ruby.

“They make great pets because they are very calm and just happy to have a nice meal, a nice bed and a short walk,” Katharyne Walters said.

“The children love them and our two parrots do too – they even call them by name!”

Carol Chown-Smith, General Manager of Perry Barr Stadium, said: “We are very proud to have one of the best Retired Greyhound Trusts in the UK.

“We were also delighted to see the return of speedway to Perry Barr and we wish them every success for the new season.”
