Westminster Anti-Scald Campaign for Local Manufacturer
15/09/06
Staffordshire thermostatic valve manufacturer Intatec took their bath time anti-scald campaign to Westminster this week, joining a conference hosted by Mary Creagh MP for Wakefield, who aims to introduce legislation that would make anti-scald valves compulsory in new bathrooms. The conference heard from burns specialists, representatives of the plumbing trade and from a children’s charity, who outlined not just the physical trauma and cost of a scalding injury, but the psychological trauma too. They also heard how easy it is to make the plumbing changes that can keep scalding hot water out of the bathroom.
Inta’s Commercial Director, Cynthia Fisher said “There is a compelling case for anti-scald valves to be a feature of bathrooms, to prevent the 20 deaths and 570 serious injuries that happen every year. It’s children and the elderly who are most at risk. As a manufacturer of anti-scald valves, for showers, baths and basins we’ve been promoting the safety aspects of our equipment or some time now. We’re pleased that Mary Creagh has taken up her campaign and she’s attracted the attention of some pretty influential organisations and individuals to support her.”
Mary Creagh said “The Government is looking at the building regulations which govern bath taps. It is vital that we use this rare opportunity to make ministers aware of these dangers and push for a change in the law. Provisions for safe hot water have already been introduced in Scotland – so why not England, Wales and Northern Ireland too?”
Anti-scald valves can be easily fitted as part of a new bathroom installation or as a retro-fit item, to make existing bathrooms safer.
