MAPLE HAYES SCHOOL PUPILS RAISE £1,000 FOR CHARITY
07/01/08

Entrepreneurial skills were in full flow when pupils at a Staffordshire school raised more than £1,000 for charity - by asking teachers to let them.

A group of Year 11 youngsters at Maple Hayes School in Lichfield collected cash by selling cakes at breaktime, raffling off chocolate and photographs, cleaning cars and hosting a non-uniform day.

They had first approached staff to request a fundraising week, after discussing the role of charities during an English lesson.

Among the many costumes were The Wizard of Oz characters, who presented a cheque for £1,000 to Myles Godfrey, Area Volunteer Manager, Community Fundraising, for Cancer Research UK, recently.

Other costumes included Star Wars characters, Lou and Andy from Little Britain, gangsters, a cowboy, a leprechaun, and two pupils who dressed as Headmaster Dr Daryl Brown and Principal Dr Neville Brown.

The four pupils who came up with the fundraising idea were Hannah Ellis, Matthew Pryce, Grace Hamilton and Conor Flaherty, who all impressed their teachers with their enterprising efforts.

Headmaster Dr Daryl Brown said: “We are very proud of all the pupils at Maple Hayes School who helped to raise this fantastic total.

“For a school of less than 100 children it was a tremendous team effort and the four pupils who kickstarted this fundraising should be very pleased with themselves.”

Maple Hayes School, based in Abnalls Lane, Lichfield, specialises in teaching children with dyslexia and is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary year.
