MAPLE HAYES SCHOOL PUPILS RAISE £800 FOR CHARITY
Enterprising pupils at a Staffordshire school have raised more than £800 for charity - by asking their teachers to let them.
A group of Year 11 youngsters at Maple Hayes School in Lichfield approached staff to request a fundraising week, after discussing the role of charities during an English lesson.
They collected cash by selling cakes at breaktime, raffling off chocolate and photographs and hosting a non-uniform day.
The schoolchildren have vowed to keep going until the total tops £1,000, with all the money going to Cancer Research.
The four pupils who came up with the idea are Hannah Ellis, Matthew Pryce, Grace Hamilton and Conor Flaherty.
And they really impressed teachers with their efforts.
Headteacher, Dr Daryl Brown, praised the pupils for their hard work.
“It is a tremendous achievement to have already raised £800, bearing in mind we are a school of less than 100 children,” he said.
“We are delighted to see the pupils’ fantastic dedication to raising the money and they are keen to keep going until they top the £1,000 milestone.”
Maple Hayes School, based in Abnalls Lane, Lichfield, specialises in teaching children with dyslexia and is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary year.
Maple Hayes School specialises in teaching children with dyslexia and currently has around 100 pupils, between the ages of eight and 16.
The school was founded 25 years ago by the husband and wife team of Dr Neville Brown, an Educational Psychologist, and Brenda Brown, the Bursar and former teacher.
Their son, Dr Daryl Brown, has been Headmaster at Maple Hayes since 2000, but has been involved in its development since the start in 1982.
The school is the only one in the world which uses a revolutionary teaching method designed by Dr Neville Brown, which has a proven track record of success.
Pupils who attend Maple Hayes School have achieved some excellent examination results and always show an improvement compared to their education when in mainstream schools.
